When people talk about the value of large predators, the conversation often stays abstract: biodiversity, balance, wilderness. New research from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula makes one possible benefit remarkably concrete. Cougars may help keep deer—and therefore drivers—out of dangerous road encounters.
Researchers combined information from 503 camera locations, GPS data from 59 cougars and nearly 1,000 reported wildlife–vehicle collisions. In places with the greatest cougar activity, deer were more likely to use remote habitat, avoid dense road networks and shift toward daylight activity.
Predators change behavior, not only numbers
A cougar does not need to kill every deer near a roadway to affect collision risk. Its presence changes the landscape of danger. Deer respond by altering when and where they travel. Ecologists sometimes call these indirect effects a “landscape of fear,” although the phrase describes a measurable behavioral response rather than a claim about an animal’s emotional experience.
The study’s models estimated a 67 percent reduction in collision probability and a 76 percent reduction in expected collisions over five years in areas of high cougar activity. Those figures are model estimates, not a guarantee that adding a cougar to any landscape will produce the same result. Road design, traffic, habitat and prey behavior all matter.
A different coexistence question
Public discussions often begin with the risk that cougars pose to people. Serious encounters deserve honest attention. But a complete calculation must also include risks predators may reduce. Deer collisions kill animals, damage vehicles and injure people. If native predators redirect deer away from roads, coexistence is not merely something humans grant wildlife; it may be a relationship with reciprocal benefits.
